What fruit is mangosteen? Where is it grown?

Characteristics of mangosteen tree

Mangosteen has the scientific name Garcinia mangostana L and is a plant belonging to the Cora family. It is a fruit tree commonly grown in countries such as Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam.

With its sweet and sour flavor and delicate texture, today mangosteen is also grown in Southeast Asian countries, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, the Philippines and India.

In Vietnam, mangosteen is grown widely in the South, Southeast, and Mekong Delta.

Classification of mangosteen trees

There are many types of mangosteen. Each type has a different shape and flavor. In Vietnam, there are two most known types: Lai Thieu mangosteen (Binh Duong) and mangosteen imported from Thailand.

  • Lai Thieu mangosteen has a large stem, round gourd shape, dark purple skin, sweet and sour flavor that attracts the taste buds.
  • Thai mangosteen has a small stem but is longer, has an orange-brown skin, has a sweet, soft taste, and is easy to chew and swallow.

What season is mangosteen?

Mangosteen season usually starts from April to June and depending on the weather each year, mangosteens ripen sooner or later. However, to reach the best taste, it must be in mid-June of the calendar . At this time, the mangosteen fruit is red, full, flavorful, sweet and fragrant and of the best quality.

Method of growing mangosteen trees

Mangosteen is a plant with high economic value and is a perennial plant. Regarding feng shui, any house with a mangosteen tree in the front yard is very good, helping our house always be full of vitality.

Cultivation techniques

Garden design

It is necessary to design the garden according to contour lines to facilitate planting, care and harvesting. Depending on the size of the garden area, design the windbreak garden appropriately . Planting density of 10mx10m is equivalent to 100 trees/ha.

Hole digging technique

The size of the planting hole is 60cmx60cmx60cm . During the process of digging holes, it is necessary to keep the bottom and top soil layers separate, not mixed. Then, mix 20kg of decomposed organic fertilizer with topsoil and put it in the hole, then cover the bottom soil on top. Apply 0.5-1kg of lime fertilizer, 100-200 grams of NPK, 10-20kg of decomposed organic fertilizer. Stir well with the soil, water to keep the soil moist and wait 20-30 days before sowing to help the plant have the best conditions to grow and increase its resistance to pests and diseases.

Note : The hole must be prepared at least 20-30 days before planting can begin.

Fertilization techniques

Seedling period

  • Decomposed organic fertilizer : 10-15kg/year.
  • Apply inorganic fertilizer in the first year at the amount of 0.5kg/tree according to the formula N:P:K 15:15:15, in the following years the amount of fertilizer per tree is 1kg/year.
  • Fertilize 2-4 times a year.

Post-harvest period (10th year onwards)

  • 1st time (Fertilize after harvest) : NPK 20-5-6 with decomposed organic fertilizer of 20-30kg/tree.
  • Second time (30 – 40 days before flowering) : NPK 20-20-15 fertilizer amount 1 – 2 kg/tree.
  • Third time (when the tree has just set fruit) : NPK 17-7-21 fertilizer amount 2 – 3kg/treeFertilization techniques

How to care

Watering mangosteen trees in the seedling stage must be watered fully, especially in the dry months so that the tree can be healthy and grow quickly. Lack of water can cause the tree to wilt and become stunted.

During the flowering and fruit-bearing stage, before flowering and the flower bud differentiation stage, the mangosteen tree needs to be dry for about 15-20 days . When the fruit grows quickly, it requires a high humidity of 70-90% . If there is a lack of juice, the fruit will fall and the fruit will be small, reducing quality and output.

When the fruit is about to ripen, the moisture requirement is about 50-60%. If the humidity is high, it will reduce fruit quality and ripening.

How long does it take to bear fruit?

Mangosteen trees grown from seeds bear fruit when the tree is 8 – 10 years old or longer depending on care methods.

If you want to bear fruit early, you can grow it from a grafted tree, usually when it reaches 4-5 years old, depending on how it is cared for, to produce fruit. Mangosteen yield can vary, depending on climate and tree age. If the tree is young for the first time it can produce 200–300 fruits, while when mature it averages 500 fruits per season .

Planting a mangosteen tree for 8-10 years will produce fruit
