Prepare planting tools, soil and seeds

Planting tools

You can take advantage of nylon bags, cement bags, pots, trays or styrofoam boxes available in your house or empty land in the garden to grow peas. Note: Perforate holes in the bottom of the tray for drainage.

Planting land

Peas can grow well in many different types of soil. However, plants will yield higher yields in areas where the soil retains moisture well, is high, drains easily and has a pH of 5.6-6.5. You can buy ready-made soil or mix it with decomposed cow manure, chicken manure, earthworm compost, rice husks, coconut fiber, etc.

Seeds

Currently, there are two popular types of peas: climbing peas and dwarf peas. You can choose varieties depending on conditions and preferences. You should choose high-yielding varieties at reputable agricultural stores.

Soak and sow seeds

Soak the seeds in warm water for 30 minutes (temperature 50-52 degrees Celsius) and wrap them in a warm towel for about 1 day until the seeds crack and then sow. Dwarf peas: Sow seeds 30cm apart, 7cm apart. Climbing peas: Rows 60-70cm apart, plants 20cm apart. After sowing the seeds, cover them with a thin layer of soil of 1-2cm. Water with a light sprinkler. Cover the newly sown seeds for about 2 days. Water twice a day.

Care

Water the peas twice a day, early in the morning and late in the afternoon. When the peas produce 4-5 true leaves, fertilize with organic fertilizer, cow manure, goat manure, earthworm compost… The second round of fertilizer is applied when the peas flower. The third round of fertilizing is applied after harvesting the first round of fruit. Combine weeding and cultivating each time you fertilize. Make a trellis (for climbing peas): When the peas start to show tendrils, make a trellis for the plant. Making a trellis for peas is similar to green beans, arranged in the shape of the letter A. The length of the truss is from 1.5-2m, using materials such as sticks, bamboo, old bamboo, bamboo shoots, jute seedlings, Truss poles and ties are made from plastic…

Harvest

Peas use young pods so they should be harvested after the young seeds begin to swell. Harvesting early in the morning will be of better quality and fresher. For beans, eat young seeds later in the fall (when the pods change color), the seeds are swollen and relatively hard, but not too old or dry. Dried peas are harvested when the seeds are old, dry, and the pods are silvery. It needs to be harvested promptly and not left too dry because some varieties have the ability to peel off their bark right on the tree.
